An original song - my tribute to Adam Schlesinger (October 31, 1967 – April 1, 2020), and specifically his band, Fountains of Wayne.

Adam was a musician, songwriter, composer, and record producer, and a founding member of Fountains of Wayne, Ivy, and Tinted Windows. In addition, Adam was a key songwriting contributor and producer for Brooklyn-based synth-pop duo Fever High. He wrote songs for TV & film, won three Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and the ASCAP Pop Music Award. Adam was nominated for Academy, Tony, and Golden Globe Awards.

He was a dedicated, talented, inspiring writer. And I really enjoyed his music, and am inspired by his ethic, dedication to the craft, and immense output of wonderful songs and stories.

about

On April 1st, 2020, I heard the shocking news - Fountains of Wayne bassist and genius, prolific songwriter Adam Schlesinger had passed away due to complications from Covid. Adam was a fountain of creativity, a spring continually bursting with song, a storyteller who left us far too soon.

That night, with my kids asleep (or at the very least, staying quiet), the only way I could find suitable for processing this sadness (while quarantined at home), was to write a song.

Throughout that process, I pulled as many FoW song and lyrical references that I could think of and loaded them into my own little pop-rock ditty. Yes, I injected some of my own lyrical content, most of which I derived from New Jersey imagery and personal memories.

I decided NOT to include any names (Stacy, Julie, Denise, Halley, Joe, Barbara, Yolanda, Michael, Heather, Janice, Maureen, Richie and Ruben), a hallmark of Adam's writing, because I wanted to the song to come in under 12 minutes. ;-)

Throughout the recording process, Ahren Buchheister and I referenced many FoW songs - all in an effort to pay respect to the band's rock-power-pop sound and storytelling approach. I came no where close to Adam's wit. Hey, some mountains take longer to climb.

Now, two years later to the day, I am delighted to present to you this tribute. I hope it adequately shows my admiration for the rich FoW catalog of pop song gems. Pop songwriting, something I strive to do well, is so much harder than it looks from the other side of the speakers.

I sincerely hope you'll enjoy this song. If you do, share it with someone who you think would like it!

Thank you for listening.

lyrics

NO BETTER PL

Not sure it’s 4 or exit 5. I just wanna make it to the shore alive.
We might have break some rules tonight. I’ll pay the toll.
You look so good radiating vibes.
We’re on the turnpike to survive.
Everyone’s driving off tonight to never get old.

Hold on to the things that make you feel safe.
Or sink to the bottom and make mistakes.
Make peace and love the only way you’ll ever know.
I’m hung up on you like Mexican wine.
I bought you a song and all kinds of time.
I know you well. There’s no better place tonight.

The sand in the waves… the medicine.
Umbrellas in fruits drinks and killer bangs.
Splinters on boardwalks and endless hangs. Nights without end.
Wake up with a sunburn and empty cans.
Wondering where are all our friends.
And how did we end up on this couch and
Where have we been?

Hold on to the things that make you feel safe.
Or sink to the bottom and make mistakes.
Make peace and love the only way you’ll ever know.
I’m hung up on you like Mexican wine.
I bought you a song and all kinds of time.
I know you well. There’s no better place tonight.

So what’ll it be? The summer place
A dip in the ocean.
It’s nice to get away these days
And write a new Road Song

Hold on to the things that make you feel safe.
Or sink to the bottom and make mistakes.
Make peace and love the only way you’ll ever know.
I’m hung up on you like Mexican wine.
I bought you a song and all kinds of time.
I know you well.
There’s no better place tonight.

I have been writing songs since the 90's and have released some albums, EP's, and singles over the years.

My primary instrument is guitar, so many songs have an acoustic quality. I'm a fan of lush harmonies, big strings, & dreamy synths. I hope you find something appealing. Thank you for visiting and listening.
